What if I told you there are chains binding you? That there’s a force seeking to diminish your life, strip away your freedom, and confine you within invisible shackles. Would you believe it? Some may nod in agreement, acknowledging the unseen burdens they carry. Others might hesitate, feeling confident in their self-awareness. Yet, the truth remains: we all bear a target on our backs. It’s a spiritual battle manifesting in physical realms, and the battleground is spelled out for us in the Book of Exodus.
In this article, we will look at two obstacles that hinder our ability to walk in freedom through God's power, and discover Bible passages that can help you avoid these pitfalls.
As we delve into this historical account, we encounter the Hebrew people who were once enslaved by the mightiest nation of their time - Egypt. It all began when Joseph, a Hebrew who was sold into slavery by his own brothers, ended up serving Pharaoh. After many years, Joseph reconciled with his brothers and brought his family to Egypt so he could help them survive a years-long famine (Genesis 41-46). This family - the Israelites - grew so numerous that the Egyptians feared being overtaken by them. The Egyptian's response wasn’t merely to suppress the Israelites but to strip them of their power, thereby robbing them of their freedom.
The Dance Between Power and Freedom
In the intricate dance between power and freedom, we witness the erosion of liberties when power falls into the wrong hands. Just as the Egyptians sought to diminish the Israelites’ numbers through oppression, we face contemporary forms of oppression that threaten our freedoms. From political maneuvers to societal shifts, the balance of power dictates the extent of our liberty. That is why it is so important to fix our eyes and devotion to the all-powerful God, remembering His promise to fight for us. "The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent" (Exodus 14:14 ESV).
Threat #1 - Complacency, Comfort, and Contentment
Consider the cautionary account of the Israelites who, shortly after being liberated from slavery, complained and pleaded to Moses to bring them back to Egypt, where they had better food than what was available during their journey to the Promised Land. In their slavery, they grew complacent, comfortable, and content, and though they wanted to be free, they didn't want to temporarily give up creature comforts in order to complete their difficult trek to the land flowing with milk and honey. "If only we had died by the Lord’s hand in Egypt! There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death” (Exodus 16:3 NIV).
Similarly, in the comfort of our modern lives, we risk overlooking encroachments on our freedom, deceived by a false sense of security. Proverbs 1:32 warns: "The complacency of fools will destroy them." It’s a wake-up call to remain vigilant in safeguarding our liberties.
Furthermore, compromising principles to prioritize personal comfort leads us down a treacherous path. The allure of ease can overshadow the principles we hold dear, blinding us to gradually eroding our freedoms. Galatians 5:1 reminds us: "For freedom, Christ has set us free. Stand firm then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery." Our pursuit of comfort must never come at the expense of our principles.
Threat #2 - Idolatry
Perhaps the most insidious threat to freedom lies in idolatry and distorted pursuits. Idolatry is when we worship something other than the one true God. The challenge in our Western society is that we believe idolatry is bowing down to a statue in our home, but it's more than this. When something or someone else becomes more important to us than God, we are on the journey back to enslavement.
Consider again the Israelites who, when they felt abandoned by Moses and the God he served, made for themselves a golden calf in their efforts to seek guidance and protection from the gods worshipped by the surrounding nations. By elevating their temporal desire for a feeling of safety over their eternal security in God's care, they surrendered their true power to idolatrous spiritual forces that offer no true liberation. The golden calf of our desires beckons, diverting our allegiance from the source of true freedom.
Ignoring the consequences of our choices further entrenches us in bondage. Galatians 6:7 admonishes, "A man reaps what he sows." Our decisions, whether conscious or not, shape the landscape of our freedom. By recognizing the power dynamics at play, we can see our need for God. By turning our focus away from our chains and onto God, who is the chain-breaker, we can reclaim the freedom that has been lost.
In this intricate interplay of power and freedom, one truth emerges: true freedom lies in surrendering to the power of Christ. Paradoxically, in becoming slaves to Christ, we find ultimate liberation. It’s a paradigm shift where bondage gives way to boundless freedom, and chains of darkness are shattered.
Where to go from here
So, where do we stand in this journey toward freedom? Are we complacent in our comfort, forsaking principles for temporary ease? Have we succumbed to idolatry, surrendering our power to unworthy causes? Let us not ignore the consequences of our choices but instead wield our power to turn to God and reclaim the freedom that is rightfully ours.
"Freedom lies where the balance of power resides."
In the end, freedom lies where the balance of power resides. And as we entrust our power to the One True God who breaks every chain, we find ourselves truly free.
