Many people believe in Jesus. They acknowledge His existence, His teachings, and even that He is the Son of God. But is that enough? Or is Jesus calling us to something deeper?
Jesus, fully God and fully human, came to earth so everyone is given an opportunity to receive forgiveness of sin through His death and resurrection. Anyone who accepts Jesus as their personal Savior and Lord becomes a new creation, a child of God who will spend eternity with Him. Once that decision is made, then what?
Belief Alone is Not the Goal
James 2:19 (ESV) tells us, “You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!” This verse is a wake-up call. Belief alone isn’t the finish line—it’s the crossroad. Demons believe in Jesus but remain opposed to Him. When a person accepts that Jesus is God, a decision must be made to either follow or turn away from Him.
Jesus Calls Us to Follow Him
Throughout the Gospels, Jesus didn’t just invite people to believe in Him—He called them to follow Him. In Matthew 4:19 (ESV), Jesus says to Peter and Andrew, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” He didn’t say, “Acknowledge that I am the Messiah and go on with your life.” He called them to a radical shift—a response that required action.
Following Jesus is a daily practice, not just a one-time decision to believe. In Luke 9:23 (ESV), Jesus says: “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”
The Danger of Passive Faith
The Lord warns against a passive, lukewarm faith in Revelation 3:16 (ESV): “So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.” He desires a faith that moves us to action. A faith that merely acknowledges Jesus without transforming our lives is not the faith Jesus calls us to.
Faith That Transforms
True faith results in righteous living. In Matthew 7:21 (ESV), Jesus says, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” Real faith is not all talk; it’s about actions that align with God.
Consider the story of the rich young ruler in Mark 10:17-22. He believed in Jesus, but when Jesus called him to leave everything and follow Him, the rich man walked away sad. His belief did not move him to trusting obedience. On the other hand, Zacchaeus, the tax collector, responded to Jesus by giving half of his possessions to the poor (Luke 19:8-9). His faith wasn’t just intellectual—it was transformative.
What Is Jesus Asking of You?
If you believe in Jesus, the next question is: How are you responding to Him? Are you surrendering your life to Him? Are you allowing Him to transform your heart and actions?
Belief in Jesus is crucial—it’s where it all begins. But Jesus calls us to more. He calls us to follow Him, to take up our cross, and to live a life that reflects His love, grace, and truth. So today, let’s not just believe—let’s follow Him.
Practical Next Steps for Responding to Jesus
-
Daily Surrender in Prayer – Start each day by asking Jesus to guide you. Surrender your plans and desires to Him, inviting Him to lead.
-
Read and Apply Scripture – Don’t just read the Bible—live it out. Ask yourself, “How does this passage shape my actions today?”
-
Serve Others – Jesus calls us to love and serve others (Mark 10:45). Look for ways to be His hands and feet in your community.
-
Share Your Faith – Tell others about Jesus, not just through words, but by living a life that reflects Him.
-
Join a Faith Community – Surround yourself with believers who encourage, challenge, and support you in your journey.
-
Obey the Holy Spirit’s Leading – When you feel God nudging you toward an action, be obedient—even when it’s outside your comfort zone.
Faith isn’t just about what we believe—it’s about how we live in response to Jesus. Let’s move beyond belief and step into a faith that follows, obeys, and transforms.
