In my 30 years of being a Christian - 20 of which have been as a pastor - I have met many people with reservations about attending church.  Whether it is because of being hurt or because of misconceptions about Christianity or Christians, barriers regarding church can make it difficult to understand what it means to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

If you can allow yourself to take a moment to look beyond your feelings about Christians, church, or organized religion in general and look, instead, at Jesus, you may be surprised at how He can transform your heart, your relationships, and your life.

Read on to learn 6 steps you can take to help you get to know the real Jesus.

1. Seek and Learn

The first step on this spiritual journey is to gain knowledge and understanding about Jesus. Begin by reading the Bible, specifically the New Testament, which focuses on Jesus' life, teachings, and his purpose. The Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John provide a comprehensive account of his ministry, parables, miracles, and the profound love he displayed. Be open-minded and receptive to the wisdom contained in these Scriptures.

"Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you." (Matthew 7:7)

2. Reflect and Pray

As you delve deeper into Jesus' teachings, take time to reflect on their meaning and relevance in your own life. Engage in prayer, expressing your thoughts, doubts, and desires to God. Seek guidance, understanding, and a genuine connection with Jesus through prayerful communication.

"Be still, and know that I am God." (Psalm 46:10)

3. Recognize Your Need for Salvation

One of the core teachings of Jesus is the need for salvation. Acknowledge your shortcomings, weaknesses, and the ways in which you have fallen short of God's standards. Understand that Jesus offers forgiveness and redemption for all who believe in him.

"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23)

4. Believe in Jesus as Lord and Savior

Central to becoming a follower of Jesus is placing your faith and trust in him as your Lord and Savior. Believe that Jesus is the Son of God, sent to reconcile humanity to God through his sacrificial death and resurrection. Embrace him as the ultimate source of salvation and eternal life.

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16)

5. Repent and be Baptized

Repentance is the act of turning away from a life of sin and turning towards God. It involves a sincere change of heart and a commitment to follow Jesus. As a symbolic act, baptism represents the washing away of sins and the newness of life found in Christ. Be baptized as a public declaration of your faith and commitment.

6. Grow in Faith and Discipleship

Becoming a follower of Jesus is not a one-time event but a lifelong journey. Seek opportunities to deepen your faith by joining a Christian community, attending church services, participating in Bible study groups, and surrounding yourself with fellow believers. Engage in prayer, worship, and study of God's word to nurture your relationship with Jesus.

"And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another." (Hebrews 10:24-25)

Takeaway

Embarking on a journey to become a follower of Jesus is a personal and transformative experience. By seeking knowledge, reflecting, praying, and embracing the teachings of Jesus, you open yourself up to a world of love, grace, and spiritual growth. Remember, the steps outlined here are not a rigid formula but a guide to help you come to personally know the Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Let the Scriptures speak to your heart, and let the Holy Spirit guide you on this remarkable journey.

As you progress, be patient with yourself and understand that faith is a lifelong process. Surround yourself with a supportive community of believers who can encourage and uplift you along the way. Trust in God's promises rely on his strength, and let the teachings of Jesus shape your thoughts, actions, and relationships.

Ultimately, the decision to follow Jesus is deeply personal and requires a genuine desire to know him. If you are earnest in your pursuit, it is my prayer that you find solace, purpose, and a deep connection with the One who is the embodiment of love and truth. May your journey be filled with joy, peace, and an ever-deepening relationship with Jesus Christ.
