Do you want to read the Bible but don’t know where to start?  Have you started reading Scripture, but have found it confusing or overwhelming?

You are not alone.

God has given us His Word to provide guidance, inspiration, and wisdom in navigating our lives.  Reading the Bible is instrumental in building our relationship with Jesus and understanding our Father in Heaven. But, knowing where to begin can be challenging, especially for beginners.

The S.O.A.P. method, developed by Wayne Cordeiro, is one of the most effective methods you can use.  This method helps you engage with the text and understand its message more deeply.

This article will explore how to read the Bible using the S.O.A.P. method.

I have been journaling through the Bible using the S.O.A.P method for over 20 years, and I continue to use this method today because it helps me grow in my relationship with God and it continues to help me to apply His Word to my life.  By putting this practice into your life, you too can be blessed.

What is the S.O.A.P. Method?

The S.O.A.P. method is a simple and effective way to read and study the Bible.

It stands for Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer.

Here is how you can use the S.O.A.P. method:

Scripture: Choose a passage or verse from the Bible to read. It can be a short or long passage; but it should be something that you can read in one sitting.

Observation: After reading the passage, write down what you observed. What stood out to you? What does the passage mean? What message is the author trying to convey? Be as specific and detailed as possible.

Application: Once you have identified the message of the passage, think about how you can apply it to your life. What actions can you take based on what you have learned? How can you live out the message in your daily life?

Prayer: Finally, pray about what you have learned. Ask God to help you apply the passage's message to your life. Thank Him for the wisdom and guidance that you have received.

Why use the S.O.A.P. Method?

The S.O.A.P. method is an effective way to read the Bible because it helps you engage with the text more deeply.

Rather than simply reading the words on the page, you are actively seeking to understand the meaning of the passage and how it applies to your life.

It also helps you remember what you have learned. By writing down your observations and applications, you are more likely to remember them and live them out.

Tips for Using the S.O.A.P. Method

Here are some tips for using the S.O.A.P. method effectively:

  1. Choose a passage that speaks to you: The Bible is a large book, so it can be overwhelming to know where to start.  Begin by selecting a passage that speaks to you or addresses something that you are struggling with.
  2. Be consistent: Try to read the Bible using the S.O.A.P. method on a regular basis. This will help you develop a habit of studying the Bible and make it easier to remember what you have learned.
  3. Use a journal: Writing down your observations and applications in a journal can be helpful. You can also look back at what you have learned and see how you have grown over time.
  4. Be open-minded: Be open to what God is trying to teach you through the passage. Even if the message is difficult to understand or apply, trust that God has a purpose for revealing it to you.

The S.O.A.P. method is an effective way to read and study the Bible. It helps you engage with the text on a deeper level and apply its message to your life.

By consistently using this method, you can grow in your understanding of God's word and deepen your relationship with Him. So, choose a passage, grab a journal, and start reading the Bible using the S.O.A.P. method today!
