Why the Bible is Essential for Successful Living & 3 Steps to Absorb It

Written by By Mark Warren | Oct 7, 2024 6:27:58 PM

Do you want to live with purpose, be productive, and experience fulfillment?  To attain true and satisfying success, we need the Bible.  It provides all the essential ingredients you need: wisdom, protection, direction, purpose, strength, and power.  This article will help you understand the problem with leaving God's Word out of your life, show you why Scripture is the solution, and give you three steps to help you get all of this and more from the Bible.

In a world that constantly shifts its values, the one unchanging foundation we can stand on is God’s Word. It's not just a book filled with ancient wisdom—it’s God’s living voice, speaking directly to us about how we should live, think, and respond in every situation. Yet, so many of us find ourselves wandering, unsure of where we’re headed, because we’re not grounded in the Bible.

The Bible isn’t just a guidebook for Sundays; it’s a lamp that lights our path every day (Psalm 119:105). Without it, we risk stumbling through life, relying on our own limited understanding instead of the unshakable truth of God’s Word.

If we want lives marked by purpose, strength, and resilience—lives that reflect God’s wisdom in an unstable world—we need to be firmly planted in Scripture.

Today, we’ll dive into why God’s Word is essential for living well, avoiding the chaos of doing things "our own way," and how it equips us to live in line with His will.

The Problem

Without the Bible, we are left doing what’s right in our own eyes (Judges 17:6).  The historical context of this verse gives us a chilling reminder of the chaos, destruction, and suffering that results from self-focused living.  It’s so easy to drift away from the authority of Scriture and begin doing whatever feels right. But history and personal experiences show us time and again what a slippery slope it is to wander from God's Word.

We see it happening today. We’re living in times where people want to make up their own rules. Take the debates about gender and sports or other issues dealing with what’s right and wrong, like some of the biggest life questions affecting our society today, including:

  • What does the Bible say about same-sex relationships? There’s an answer for that.
  • What does the Bible say about sex outside of marriage? Yup, the Bible speaks to that.
  • How about swearing, or what shows we should watch? The Bible addresses those things too.

Everyone has their own opinion; but opinions aren’t the standard for truth.

The Solution

What if instead of doing what feels right, we turn to the Bible?

2 Timothy 3:16–17 says, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”

The Word of God has the answers and when we allow it to have authority in our lives, things change for the better.

God’s Word speaks truth into all aspects of life, from our relationships to the choices we make every day. When we reject the Bible’s authority, we’re rejecting God’s design and Jesus Himself.

So here’s the big question: Does the Bible carry authority in your life?

Remember, 2 Timothy 3:16 tells us that “all Scripture is God-breathed.” This means it has the power to transform us. The Bible was written by 35–40 authors over 1,500 years, inspired by the Holy Spirit. They weren’t just writing their own ideas; they were under divine inspiration.

And let’s not forget the person of Jesus. John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” That’s Jesus. Jesus and the Word of God go hand in hand. So when Jesus says, “Depart from me, I never knew you,” could it be that if we don’t know the Word, we don’t truly know Jesus?

3 Steps to Help You Let the Bible Bring You Success

  1. Store Up God's Word in Your Heart

There is great power in storing up God's Word in your heart.

Psalm 119 says, “I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.”

When we immerse ourselves in Scripture, it fills our minds and helps guide us away from temptation and sin that leads to destruction. And, when tough times come, the Word sustains us, giving us life when we feel like we’re losing hope.

So, how do you store up God’s Word? Do you have a physical Bible? It’s great to use digital versions, but there’s something powerful about physically flipping through pages, underlining verses, and keeping it close.

  2. Meditate on God's Word

We’re also called to meditate on God’s Word. Psalm 1:2–3 says, “But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.”

Who doesn’t want to prosper? According to this scripture, meditating on God’s Word day and night will help us be strong, fruitful, and steadfast, like a well-watered tree. God’s Word brings wisdom and success.

  3. Let the Bible Guide You

Finally, let’s not forget that God’s Word is our guide. As Psalm 119:105 reminds us, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

Without God’s Word, we might be wandering in the wrong direction. It’s the compass that points us toward God’s will for our lives.

Grace and obedience go hand in hand. Here’s the thing—grace is not a free pass to do whatever we want. Sometimes we get stuck in this idea of sloppy grace: “I can live how I want because God will forgive me.” But that’s not the point of grace. Grace restores our relationship with God through repentance, not as an excuse to keep sinning.

Paul reminds us in Romans 6:1–2, “What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means!”

Grace without repentance leads to chaos. But when we follow God’s Word, not out of legalism, but out of love, that’s where we find life.

The Bottom Line

If you want to experience success and fulfillment in your relationships, work, and lots of other big and small life decisions, pick up a Bible and as you read it:

  1. Store up God’s Word in your heart. What are you doing daily to keep God’s Word close?
  2. Meditate on the Word. Spend time thinking about scripture—what it means and how it applies to your life.
  3. Let God’s Word be your guide. Are you allowing the Bible to light your path?

God’s Word is critical to successful living because it brings wisdom, guidance, and life.  Let’s commit to being deeply rooted in the Bible, the unshakable truth that leads us to a future filled with purpose and hope.
