Life is full of tests, trials, disappointments, and unmet expectations, isn’t it? We feel loss, frustration, and that nagging sense of "ugh" when things go wrong. But can we have joy in the middle of our struggles? The Bible tells us we can have joy despite our circumstances.
Followers of Jesus can often confuse people. When life seems to be falling apart, someone might ask, “Why are you so happy?” But joy isn’t the same as happiness. Happiness depends on external circumstances while joy comes from within. It’s rooted in a relationship with God. It’s something the world can’t manufacture or understand.
Let me share a little story. My trusty 2002 Chevy Suburban, affectionately called Black Beauty, broke down on the highway the other day. After a comedy of errors involving three tow trucks, multiple garages, and some do-it-yourself attempts, Black Beauty is now parked in my driveway awaiting a miracle. On top of that, my son’s car ended up in a ditch during a snowstorm, leaving us down two vehicles.
Despite the chaos, I found unexpected joy. Driving my wife to work has become sweet time together in the mornings. Yes, these challenges are minor compared to losing a loved one or enduring a broken relationship, but they reminded me of an important truth: we can find joy even when life hands us lemons.
Joy in the Midst of Trials
Hebrews 12:1-2 gives us a powerful example of joy in hardship:
"Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God."
Did you catch that? For the joy set before him. Jesus endured betrayal, beatings, and the agony of the cross—all because of the joy awaiting Him. This wasn’t superficial happiness but a deep, abiding confidence in God’s purpose and plan. And here’s the amazing news: the same Spirit that gave Jesus joy can reside in us.
Jesus warned us in John 16:33, “In this world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” Trials are inevitable; but God’s faithfulness is steadfast. When we lean into His presence, joy becomes possible—even in the darkest seasons.
The Source of True Joy
So, where does joy come from? Psalm 16:11 holds the answer:
"You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore."
Joy comes from being in God’s presence. Worshiping, giving thanks, and praising Him draws us closer to the source of all joy. It’s not about escaping hardship but encountering God in the middle of it.
David wrote many of his psalms during intense times of struggle. Fleeing enemies and facing uncertainty, he declared joy in the presence of God. His circumstances didn’t dictate his joy; his relationship with the Lord did.
Joy is a Gift We Can Ask For
Jesus encourages us to ask for joy. In John 16:24, He says:
"Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full."
If your joy tank is running low, ask God to fill it. The Holy Spirit, who dwells in every believer, brings joy as one of His fruits (Galatians 5:22-23). Invite Him to work in your life, to transform your perspective, and to produce joy that overflows, even in challenging times.
Charles Spurgeon said, “There is a marvelous medicinal power in joy. Most medicines are distasteful, but this, which is the best of all medicines, is sweet to the taste and comforting to the heart.” Isn’t that beautiful? Joy is a balm for weary souls, and it’s available to us through Jesus.
Joy and Trials
James 1:2-4 offers a counterintuitive perspective:
"Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing."
Trials, as painful as they are, can be our friends. They refine us, strengthen our faith, and draw us closer to God. The world tells us to avoid pain at all costs; but God uses trials to shape us into the image of Christ. Through them, we experience joy that isn’t dependent on life going smoothly but on the unchanging character of God.
Practical Steps to Cultivate Joy
-
Stay Close to Jesus — Spend time in His presence through prayer, worship, and Scripture. Joy is found where He is.
-
Practice Gratitude — Keep a journal of things you’re thankful for. Gratitude shifts your focus from problems to God’s goodness.
-
Ask for Joy — Be honest with God about where you’re at and ask the Holy Spirit to fill you with joy.
-
Rely on God’s Strength — Remember Nehemiah 8:10: “The joy of the Lord is your strength.” Lean on Him when you feel weak.
Joy That Transcends
Joy isn’t about pretending everything is fine or ignoring pain. It’s about experiencing God’s presence in the midst of difficulty. He promises to give us joy, not because life is perfect, but because He is perfect.
If you’re feeling crushed or burdened, let these words encourage you: God’s joy is good medicine for the soul. He wants to breathe life into your dry bones and fill you with hope, peace, and joy. Turn to Him, and you’ll find the strength to endure—and the joy to keep going.
